Twitter announced a change in its policy and eased the 140-characters limit on tweets. Media such as pictures and videos are now excluded from the tweet length as well as tweets which are retweeted. The new policy eased but not eliminated the 140-characters limit. This move seems to come as an effort to attract people who are not celebrities, politicians and journalists.
In my opinion twitter seems to be the most lonely place in the social media world: there is an one-direction communication model that dominates twitter. A celebrity writes and followers read. No conversations, no thought exchange, no sharing. Sometimes I suppose that it’s even worse: everyone says and nobody listen to. This model is boring for many of users. Twitter has announced that during last quarter the number od active user has increased by 3% , up to 313 milion.
Analysts remain cautious about forecasted future effects of the move. They often say “this is too late and too little”. It will be very difficult for twitter to compete with Facebook with 1,7 bilion users or Instagram with 500 milion of users. US and UK analysts forget that Twitter limits ad possibilities only to few languages. This is a simple and stupid way they ignore a lot of money from advertisement selling in many countries.
If Twitter doesn’t prove itself soon it will face the pressure from shareholders. They may force the board to evaluate alternatives which mean selling or finding a merger partner
