Video-catching sunglasses from Snapchat

The vanishing message service announced that it’s going to launch a video-catching glasses which can replace the Glass eyewear from Google. The Spectacles may be ‘available soon’ and their price will be $130 a pair. They will have one of the smallest wireless camera that will be able to make ‘snaps’ all day on a single charge.
The camera will connect to Snapchat service software by wifi or Bluetooth.
Google has stopped sales of its eyewear Glass on January. You need to know that many people mocked the Google glasses at $1500 apiece.
The Spectacles likely hit GoPro whose mini-cameras are designed to let people capture video of endeavors from personal perspectives.

How to prevent Edge to restore last tabs

By default, Edge browser restores all tabs when you restart it after a crash or simple system shut down. This can be frustrating especially when your computer can be used by other persons who are able to see your last browsing history.  Unfortunately Microsoft forgot to make easy to turn this feature off.

First of all to unable auto recover feature you should have open Edge’s Settings

and define the content which Edge opens with. It can be anything but not ‘Previous pages’. I have set Specific page – bing.com as you can see above.

Unfortunately this setting is not enough. Obviously when you close Edge and reopen it, it won’t restore previously open tabs, but if you shut down the system and don’t close Edge before, It will restore again all tabs after restart.

To prevent this behaviour you must edit the windows registry.:

  1. Press Win+S to open Windows 10 search feature and type regedit
  2. Launch regedit and find a key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoftreg1
  3. Enter new key MicrosoftEdge and its sub-key Recovery as you can see on the picture below:
    reg2
  4. Add new DWORD (32 bits) value inside the Recovery keyreg3
  5. Give a name AutoRecover to this new value and set its value to 2 as you can see on the next picture below

Twitter allows longer tweets

Twitter announced a change in its policy and eased the 140-characters limit on tweets. Media such as pictures and videos are now excluded from the tweet length as well as tweets which are retweeted. The new policy eased but not eliminated the 140-characters limit. This move seems to come as an effort to attract people who are not celebrities, politicians and journalists.

In my opinion twitter seems to be the most lonely place in the social media world:  there is an one-direction communication model that dominates twitter. A celebrity writes and followers read. No conversations, no thought exchange, no sharing. Sometimes I suppose that it’s even worse: everyone says and nobody listen to. This model is boring for many of users. Twitter has announced that during last quarter the number od active user has increased by 3% , up to 313 milion.

Analysts remain cautious about forecasted future effects of the move. They often say “this is too late and too little”. It will be very difficult for twitter to compete with Facebook with 1,7 bilion users or Instagram with 500 milion of users. US and UK analysts forget that Twitter limits ad possibilities only to few languages. This is a simple and stupid way they ignore a lot of money from advertisement selling in many countries.

If Twitter doesn’t prove itself soon it will face the pressure from shareholders. They may force the board to evaluate alternatives which mean selling or finding a merger partner

How to Pin any Shortcut to Start Menu

When you right-click an program icon, you can usually see the Pin-to Start option of the context menu. Usually is not always. I don’t know why but you cannot pin to start documents or any file shortcut in general. Fortunately there is a trick. First of all you must locate the folder

c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\

which is typically hidden (even if it is so, if you copy and paste the link above to the File Explorer address bar, there is a good chance you will open this folder). Moreover, a user don’t have permission to write to this folder. You must grant yourself with this permission.

Now if you have write permission and you are able to locate a system folder c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\ you are prepared to make a shortcut:

  1. Open two File Explorer windows
  2. In the first window locate any file you want to pin to and the second the folder ‘…\Start Menu\Programs\’
  3. Right-click the file’s icon, drag it to the second window and choose Create shortcuts here from the context menu.

Now you can find the file shortcut on the list of all applications, but not on Start Menu.

Simply right-click the newly defined shortcut and choose Pin to start from context menu. Et voila, your file has become accessible from the Start Menu.

How to reinstall Microsoft Edge

The Microsoft Edge browser is not a classic but a true Windows 10 application. It can be located in the folder

C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe
Despite of usual behavior of most of Windows applications, this one cannot be uninstalled. If you right-click on Edge icon, there won’t be showed the option Uninstall.
Microsoft protects all important elements of their operating system and they do the same with the Edge.

Sometimes we need to reinstall application, just because it fails, hangs, opens and closes immediately etc. I destroyed the Edge when I tried to move it cache and removed one of its folder. Although I had restored this folder, the Edge failed every time I was trying to launch it.

So if you need to reinstall Edge in order to repair it, just remove its folder (mentioned above), open a Powershell with a right-click and choose Run as administrator as you ca see on the picture below:

pwoershell

In a copy and paste in Powershell Window the following command

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}

powershellwin

When you press Enter the Edge installation will begin and after a while you’ll enjoy brand new and free of errors Microsoft Edge.

Hardware core-to-core communication

Everyone who buys a new PC  almost always asks about number of cores in a processor. This parameter play important role in processor speed estimation. To be true a core is a small processor which can make calculations independently. Modern computers really can do different tasks at the same time. Cores in a processor must communicate and exchange results from time to time. Until today software was the only method of the communication among cores. Until today, because researchers from North Carolina State University and the Intel Corporation just have developed hardware method to coordinate efforts between cores for multiprocessor operations. And this new way will significantly accelerate core-to-core communication.

This approach, called the core-to-core communication acceleration framework (CAF), improves communication performance by two to 12 times,” says Yan Solihin, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at NC State.

The key to the CAF design is queue management device (QMD) which is a small device which is able to do simple calculations and keeps track of communication request regardless of software routines. If you take into account that QMD can perform calculations on data from all cores and you use this property, you will increase the processor’s speed by 15%.

Edge – a terrible experience

This is not first time when Microsoft shot themselves in the foot releasing wrong designed and unfinished product. I really would like to write something positive about their flagship browser Edge. I try to use it all day and come to conclusion that Edge is totally useless. It is not only uncomfortable but also impossible to browse the modern websites with this browser.

Try for example navigate to finance.yahoo.com. It takes 30 sec to load a complete page. Now try to open any item of the menu and you will see something like this:

Untitled-1

The Market Data list is partially covered by a banner. Moreover, there is no possibility to choose any item because the whole item list simply disapears when you move a mouse to chosen item.

Most of people complain that Edge is unresponsive and extremely slow.  I notice that its is slow on some kind of javascript’s codes. Generally Edge probably has a  problem with html rendering. It suspends many times for short  during scrolling the page. It is annoying experience when the browsing is not continuous.

Edge didin’t accept extensions. You were not allowed to install your loved Evernote plugin , Laspass  or Roboform extension in order to make easy automatic logins. Microsoft wanted to keep Edge clean. Obvoiusly extensions and plugins can slow down the browser, but is it possible to run slower? Extensions are allowed for Edge for the anniversary update on August 2016. You can install them from MS app store.

Edge is not less competitive but it is totally out of competition.  Sorry Microsoft, I stay with Chrome although google spies me probably even in the toilet.

How to install and activate Windows 10 directly

By default Windows 10 was offered as a free upgrade from Win 7 or 8.x. Those people who have upgraded to Win 10 may reinstall it freely on condition they have a product key of the previous version of Windows.Because Microsoft cancel free upgrade possibility the only way is clean installation (without previously installed Win 7 or 8.x).

If you want to make install Windows 10 directly and – on the same PC. You may follow the steps below:

  1.  Download ISO image of Windows 10 from Microsoft website. Remember that you the version of the system depends on the version of your previous system. It means that you will be able to install Pro version only if you have Pro version of Win 7 or Win 8. Otherwise you must install  Windows 10 Home version.
  2. In the ISO image find the program gatherosstate.exe, copy it to the Desktop and run as Administrator (right-click, choose Run as administrator). The program read your licence and hardware information and save them into a file GenuineTicket.xml. Just copy this file to USB or a second partition or other safe place because you will need it to activate your Windows 10.
  3.  Burn ISO image on a CD and install Windows 10 from the CD. Obviously you can do it from USB. Remember to skip activation: When the installer prompts you for product key, just click Skip button.
  4. When the system is up locate a folder %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\ClipSVC\GenuineTicket and copy there the file GenuineTicket.xml previously created and saved.
  5. Restart the PC and enjoy clean installation of the best system in the world.
