How to prevent Edge to restore last tabs

By default, Edge browser restores all tabs when you restart it after a crash or simple system shut down. This can be frustrating especially when your computer can be used by other persons who are able to see your last browsing history.  Unfortunately Microsoft forgot to make easy to turn this feature off.

First of all to unable auto recover feature you should have open Edge’s Settings

and define the content which Edge opens with. It can be anything but not ‘Previous pages’. I have set Specific page – as you can see above.

Unfortunately this setting is not enough. Obviously when you close Edge and reopen it, it won’t restore previously open tabs, but if you shut down the system and don’t close Edge before, It will restore again all tabs after restart.

To prevent this behaviour you must edit the windows registry.:

  1. Press Win+S to open Windows 10 search feature and type regedit
  2. Launch regedit and find a key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoftreg1
  3. Enter new key MicrosoftEdge and its sub-key Recovery as you can see on the picture below:
  4. Add new DWORD (32 bits) value inside the Recovery keyreg3
  5. Give a name AutoRecover to this new value and set its value to 2 as you can see on the next picture below

How to Pin any Shortcut to Start Menu

When you right-click an program icon, you can usually see the Pin-to Start option of the context menu. Usually is not always. I don’t know why but you cannot pin to start documents or any file shortcut in general. Fortunately there is a trick. First of all you must locate the folder

c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\

which is typically hidden (even if it is so, if you copy and paste the link above to the File Explorer address bar, there is a good chance you will open this folder). Moreover, a user don’t have permission to write to this folder. You must grant yourself with this permission.

Now if you have write permission and you are able to locate a system folder c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\ you are prepared to make a shortcut:

  1. Open two File Explorer windows
  2. In the first window locate any file you want to pin to and the second the folder ‘…\Start Menu\Programs\’
  3. Right-click the file’s icon, drag it to the second window and choose Create shortcuts here from the context menu.

Now you can find the file shortcut on the list of all applications, but not on Start Menu.

Simply right-click the newly defined shortcut and choose Pin to start from context menu. Et voila, your file has become accessible from the Start Menu.

How to reinstall Microsoft Edge

The Microsoft Edge browser is not a classic but a true Windows 10 application. It can be located in the folder

Despite of usual behavior of most of Windows applications, this one cannot be uninstalled. If you right-click on Edge icon, there won’t be showed the option Uninstall.
Microsoft protects all important elements of their operating system and they do the same with the Edge.

Sometimes we need to reinstall application, just because it fails, hangs, opens and closes immediately etc. I destroyed the Edge when I tried to move it cache and removed one of its folder. Although I had restored this folder, the Edge failed every time I was trying to launch it.

So if you need to reinstall Edge in order to repair it, just remove its folder (mentioned above), open a Powershell with a right-click and choose Run as administrator as you ca see on the picture below:

In a copy and paste in Powershell Window the following command

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}

When you press Enter the Edge installation will begin and after a while you’ll enjoy brand new and free of errors Microsoft Edge.

How to install and activate Windows 10 directly

By default Windows 10 was offered as a free upgrade from Win 7 or 8.x. Those people who have upgraded to Win 10 may reinstall it freely on condition they have a product key of the previous version of Windows.Because Microsoft cancel free upgrade possibility the only way is clean installation (without previously installed Win 7 or 8.x).

If you want to make install Windows 10 directly and – on the same PC. You may follow the steps below:

  1.  Download ISO image of Windows 10 from Microsoft website. Remember that you the version of the system depends on the version of your previous system. It means that you will be able to install Pro version only if you have Pro version of Win 7 or Win 8. Otherwise you must install  Windows 10 Home version.
  2. In the ISO image find the program gatherosstate.exe, copy it to the Desktop and run as Administrator (right-click, choose Run as administrator). The program read your licence and hardware information and save them into a file GenuineTicket.xml. Just copy this file to USB or a second partition or other safe place because you will need it to activate your Windows 10.
  3.  Burn ISO image on a CD and install Windows 10 from the CD. Obviously you can do it from USB. Remember to skip activation: When the installer prompts you for product key, just click Skip button.
  4. When the system is up locate a folder %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\ClipSVC\GenuineTicket and copy there the file GenuineTicket.xml previously created and saved.
  5. Restart the PC and enjoy clean installation of the best system in the world.

How to Add a Local User under Windows 10

Add a user?! It seems simple? Hmm… maybe yes or mabe not. Windows 10  designers use any possibility to force us to send to MS as much personal information as possible. This is common for big IT companies’ behaviour in this horrible ‘Big Data’ realm we live in.

When you want to create a local user in your system you must expect that you will be tricked to type your name, create a free e-mail in one of MS mail service (, MS account or at least enter your another old e-mail address.

Obviously you can avoid sharing all mentioned information and just create a local user with username and password only. It is enough to make the following:

Open User Accounts and when you see the the window like below, click ‘Add a new user in PC settings’

Next, MS guys try to get know your family. Don’t allow that and press ‘Add someone else to this PC’

A second MS trick: they try to force you to send them e-mail (or create new at if you don’t have one). Don’t type anything and click the link ‘I don’t have this person…’

Well, they want you to create an email and MS account, but you are a smart guy and click ‘Add a user without Microsoft account’

Et voila! You get well known form (showd below). Now you may enter new user name, password and so called password hint in to the fields and click Next. The account will be setup. If you want change its type, you need to do it in classic ‘User Accounts’ program.

How to enable the Location Service in Windows 10

Due to a bug in Windows 10 after disabling the Geolocation Service by changing startup type to Disabled you cannot enable it anymore. This can make some problems in other applications that need access to our location. Personally I have had troubles with Cortana.

If you want check the location settings you must start from Settings application. If you did, you would have seen a Setting main window. Just click Privacy icon on it.

Now the Privacy tab is open and if you click on the Location, you may see that the button Change and Location switch are inactive (grey). This means that the Geolocation service doesn’t run.

You can launch Task Manager and find the service with a name lfsvc at Services tab . If it is stopped try to start it  (right-click  on the service and choose Start from a displayed menu). Even if you are able to start our problem  won’t be solved in future (after the computer restarting). If you have still Task Manager open just right-click and choose Start Services from the menu.

servicesThe new application (Services) will open its window on the screen. Don’t do anything now with this app but run a regedit tool (press Win+R, write reedit and press Enter). Now try to find  a key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lfsvc\TriggerInfo\3\

and delete it.

When you have done, go back to open window of Services, find Geoloaction Service in the list, right-click on the row and choose Properties.

When you see the small window with properties just choose Automatic at the field Sturtup type.

That’s all. You have setup a Location Service on for a long time.
