How to fix the non-responsive Edge

There is no doubt that the newest Microsoft browser – Edge is non-usable for many of us due to its dramatic slowness on certain pages. The good news are: it is a history.
I was very determined to solve this problem. I has been inspired by many ideas spread over Microsoft community forums.
I don’t know why but the solution is to move Edge cache folder to other location. The problem is that Edge doesn’t provide such possibility. This is why we must help on our own.
The Edge’s cache folder is in the following location:
We need to copy this folder to other location, but firstly we need to take full ownership of the folder. To do it launch Command Prompt in administrator mode:
1. Close Edge if it’s open. Presss Win+X and choose Command Prompt (Admin)
2. Copy and paste the following command:
takeown /F “%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC” /A /R

and press Enter to execute it.

3.  Copy the whole folder AC to other location (in my example this is disk E:\). Use the following command:

robocopy “%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC” “E:\Edge Cache” /E /COPYALL /DCOPY:DAT

It maybe take several minutes so be patient.

4.  Rename the original cache folder to whatever name

ren “%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC” “AC Backup”

You can delete the folder but be warned that if something goes wrong you will have to reinstall the Edge.

5. Make a symbolic link in the Edge folder with the command:

mklink /D “%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC” “E:\Edge Cache”

Notice that the link points to our my cache folder E:\Edge Cache. If you have it in other location just insert full path to it instead the one from my example.

That’s all. Just open the Edge and try some problematic pages. I hope that they will be as responsive as they should be for now.

How to prevent Edge to restore last tabs

By default, Edge browser restores all tabs when you restart it after a crash or simple system shut down. This can be frustrating especially when your computer can be used by other persons who are able to see your last browsing history.  Unfortunately Microsoft forgot to make easy to turn this feature off.

First of all to unable auto recover feature you should have open Edge’s Settings

and define the content which Edge opens with. It can be anything but not ‘Previous pages’. I have set Specific page – as you can see above.

Unfortunately this setting is not enough. Obviously when you close Edge and reopen it, it won’t restore previously open tabs, but if you shut down the system and don’t close Edge before, It will restore again all tabs after restart.

To prevent this behaviour you must edit the windows registry.:

  1. Press Win+S to open Windows 10 search feature and type regedit
  2. Launch regedit and find a key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoftreg1
  3. Enter new key MicrosoftEdge and its sub-key Recovery as you can see on the picture below:
  4. Add new DWORD (32 bits) value inside the Recovery keyreg3
  5. Give a name AutoRecover to this new value and set its value to 2 as you can see on the next picture below

Twitter allows longer tweets

Twitter announced a change in its policy and eased the 140-characters limit on tweets. Media such as pictures and videos are now excluded from the tweet length as well as tweets which are retweeted. The new policy eased but not eliminated the 140-characters limit. This move seems to come as an effort to attract people who are not celebrities, politicians and journalists.

In my opinion twitter seems to be the most lonely place in the social media world:  there is an one-direction communication model that dominates twitter. A celebrity writes and followers read. No conversations, no thought exchange, no sharing. Sometimes I suppose that it’s even worse: everyone says and nobody listen to. This model is boring for many of users. Twitter has announced that during last quarter the number od active user has increased by 3% , up to 313 milion.

Analysts remain cautious about forecasted future effects of the move. They often say “this is too late and too little”. It will be very difficult for twitter to compete with Facebook with 1,7 bilion users or Instagram with 500 milion of users. US and UK analysts forget that Twitter limits ad possibilities only to few languages. This is a simple and stupid way they ignore a lot of money from advertisement selling in many countries.

If Twitter doesn’t prove itself soon it will face the pressure from shareholders. They may force the board to evaluate alternatives which mean selling or finding a merger partner

How to reinstall Microsoft Edge

The Microsoft Edge browser is not a classic but a true Windows 10 application. It can be located in the folder

Despite of usual behavior of most of Windows applications, this one cannot be uninstalled. If you right-click on Edge icon, there won’t be showed the option Uninstall.
Microsoft protects all important elements of their operating system and they do the same with the Edge.

Sometimes we need to reinstall application, just because it fails, hangs, opens and closes immediately etc. I destroyed the Edge when I tried to move it cache and removed one of its folder. Although I had restored this folder, the Edge failed every time I was trying to launch it.

So if you need to reinstall Edge in order to repair it, just remove its folder (mentioned above), open a Powershell with a right-click and choose Run as administrator as you ca see on the picture below:

In a copy and paste in Powershell Window the following command

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}

When you press Enter the Edge installation will begin and after a while you’ll enjoy brand new and free of errors Microsoft Edge.

Edge – a terrible experience

This is not first time when Microsoft shot themselves in the foot releasing wrong designed and unfinished product. I really would like to write something positive about their flagship browser Edge. I try to use it all day and come to conclusion that Edge is totally useless. It is not only uncomfortable but also impossible to browse the modern websites with this browser.

Try for example navigate to It takes 30 sec to load a complete page. Now try to open any item of the menu and you will see something like this:

The Market Data list is partially covered by a banner. Moreover, there is no possibility to choose any item because the whole item list simply disapears when you move a mouse to chosen item.

Most of people complain that Edge is unresponsive and extremely slow.  I notice that its is slow on some kind of javascript’s codes. Generally Edge probably has a  problem with html rendering. It suspends many times for short  during scrolling the page. It is annoying experience when the browsing is not continuous.

Edge didin’t accept extensions. You were not allowed to install your loved Evernote plugin , Laspass  or Roboform extension in order to make easy automatic logins. Microsoft wanted to keep Edge clean. Obvoiusly extensions and plugins can slow down the browser, but is it possible to run slower? Extensions are allowed for Edge for the anniversary update on August 2016. You can install them from MS app store.

Edge is not less competitive but it is totally out of competition.  Sorry Microsoft, I stay with Chrome although google spies me probably even in the toilet.

Unknown Chrome features

Chrome – the most popular web browser is full of hidden features which could make our life simpler, if we only had known them.

Choosing search engines on fly

Surely, you know that Chrome allow to set up many search engines as google, yahoo, ask and whatever you want. One of them is always indicated as a default SE and it is used by the omnibox’es search mechanism.
There are not many people who know that they can change this “default” search engine ‘on fly’ – during entering text int the omnibox. Just try to write yahoo and press Tab key and the omnibox will be switched to use Yahoo for searching. If you have other websites setup as the search engines you can switch omnibox to search in this websites at any moment by typing its domain name followed by Tab key. For instance if you are a video fan it would be fine if you enter into the list of Chrome’s search engines. For now you will be always able to find a your favorite video through directly from the omnibox. It will be enough to type ‘vimeo’ in omnibox and press tab to make the omnibox switch to search engine other than the default one.
To insert a new website into the Chrome’s list launch Settings scroll down to Search and click the ‘Manage search engines’. If you want to add a new website you must enter a name, a keyword (used in the omnibox) and address with so called search parameter. For example the correct url for youtube should look like

Type 5*6 in in the Chrome’s omnibox. You will get a result of this arithmetical calculation and more: you will see a modest calculator ready to process new, even more complex expressions.

Image searching

Maybe sometimes you are not able to download an image from a website. Thanks to a searching for a similar image feature, this won’t be a case anymore. Simply right click on the image, and hit the Search Google for image option. Chrome will launch a new tab, and using Google’s reverse image lookup it’ll search for similar images on the web.

Chrome’s Task Manager

When you click Shift+Esc Chrome displays its own task manager which provides details about processes running by Chrome itself. Those are plugins, extensions and tabs. Sometimes you may want to end an useless process and free a some memory or other computer resources.

Recovering Closed Tabs

If you have closed a tab accidently while working on it, press Ctrl+Shift+T and it’ll reopen the last closed tab. Moreover you can retrieve up to 10 recently closed tabs by pressing Ctrl+Shift+T as many time as needed.

A timer

Chrome can remind you to end cooking or go somewhere. Just type in the omnibox ‘set timer for 10 minutes’ or ‘set timer for 45 seconds’ and Chrome display a timer and after 10 min or 45 sec. you will hear an alarm signal.
